Memories of Shockwave Calypso ShowWOW!!!! There I was at the House of Praise on the evening of Saturday 25th February, 2006 staring at the beautifully decorated railings that led upstairs. It was a couple hours before the show would start at 7:00pm but already the place was buzzing with activity – people stacking chairs, musicians rehearsing, food out already, the P.A. was being set up while aunties Gabrielle (De Four), Giselle (Wellington) and Kalyan (Monsegue) were putting the final touches on the magnificent stage. Lights, camera … Shockwave!
“Shockwave” contained many calypsos, ole mass renditions (like “Bee Mobile” and “Ato Running U eh See”), a mini jump-up (by the POPsicles) and a hilarious dialogue between a chicken and a psychologist about “Bird Flu”, which I especially enjoyed. The evening was a mixture of both new and old calypsoes. The first half was well received with renditions like “Too far” from uncle Dave (Davis Melville), “Zouk Praise” by Aunty Hilary (Bernard) along with “Build up de Country” by uncle Bevan (Gibson). Even the POP kids got involved with Anna (Steele) singing “We must be a People of Praise” and I did two numbers “Senseless Crime” and “The riches of our land”. There were a lot of the vintage calypsoes in the second half of the show. Uncle Norbert (Steele) sang “Blessed be de God of Israel”, and Daddy (Winston Garcia) had us laughing and thinking with his renditions of “Undercover” and Sweetie”. For those who like chutney, Aunty Chantal (Sweeney) sang “Spice up your life” and my mommy (Debbie Garcia), in sari and all, sang “Breakdown”. I was jumping up, along with a lot of the crowd when uncle Newton sang “Who yuh gonna praise” and I got into the actions for “Low is not the way to go” when uncle Darryl (Grandison) got on stage. How could I forget uncle Kierron (Scott) who sang “More”, everybody wanted to hear him some more.
The musicians did a great job at playing for us singers. They had been practicing very hard in the build up to the show. The musicians were uncle Tony (Hoyte) on guitar, my daddy (Winston Garcia) on keyboard, uncle Sheldon (Blugh) on tenor pan, uncle Richard (Millien) on drums, uncle Collin (Romero) on percussion, uncle Dave (Melville) on trumpet and uncle David (Boucal) on bass guitar. The show was unbelievable! We got rags and balloons to wave and there were give-aways and door prizes throughout the show. The food on sale was really tasty. We had delicious corn soup, fries, bake and shark and hot dogs – all served hot on the spot. The bar was well stocked and the drinks were cold. My mommy told me that POP raised close to $7,000 that night. I thought it was a great success. Submitted by Jeanne-Marie Garcia |
